If you set the footprints layer to "overlay" (at least in photoshop), and maybe add a slight bevel/emboss effect from the layer style menu, it'll make them look like they're sinking into the sand.
Google, "Wood engraving in photoshop". (or stone engraving). The same technique will work for sand or snow.
The sand looks FANTASTIC, btw...I always have trouble making mine look right. I'd appreciate any tips you could give me on that
